This is something interesting that I learned today. I was talking with a friend, discussing the current circumstances in Egypt. If you haven’t seen the news, the people in Egypt are upset with the President and the Government because of the dictator like leadership that has happened over the past 30 years. Now the people are rioting because of how another country overthrough their government. 

This image above is of a burning monk by the name of Saigon. The monk is sitting in a lotus position and has dosed himself with lighter fluid and set himself on fire as a form of protest. He is protesting because during the Vietnam War the buddhists were prohibited from carrying flags on the Buddha’s birthday. This form of protest is called a ritual suicide. The ritual was more so against the Anti-Buddhist ways of the government. This happened in 1963 in October. At the end of all the protests that the monks organized, seven of them sit themselves on fire due to ritual suicide. 

When you look at this picture, you really need to take the time to feel how intensely transcended the monk looks. You really have to be someone that is very spiritually grounded to sit in the lotus position, without flenching, and burn on fire. This is a prime example of truely being a believer in a spiritual or higher power.
